Fibre is the part of plant foods that influences digestion, stool consistency and the gut microbiome. Constipation can be associated with low fibre, but it has many other possible causes.
Key points
Look at the plateIf most meals are refined grains with very few vegetables, fibre intake may be low.
Lentils and legumesDal, chickpeas, kidney beans and cowpeas provide fibre along with protein.
Whole grainsWhole wheat, dalia and oats generally provide more fibre than refined alternatives.
Whole fruitChoosing whole fruit instead of juice usually provides more fibre.
Increase graduallyA sudden jump in fibre can cause gas and bloating.
Important cautions
Keep in mind- Drink adequate fluids when increasing fibre.
- Constipation with bleeding, weight loss or severe pain needs medical assessment.
Two broad types of fibre
Soluble fibre can form a gel with water and is found in oats, legumes and some fruits. Insoluble fibre helps add stool bulk and is found in whole grains and vegetables. Real foods usually contain a mixture.
How much fibre?
Adult guidance often falls around 25–30 g or more per day, with targets varying by age, sex and energy needs. You do not have to count every gram.
Read your plate
If fruit is rare, vegetables are minimal, legumes are infrequent and most grains are refined, fibre intake is likely to be low.
Why increase gradually?
Gut microbes ferment fibre, so suddenly adding large amounts of chickpeas, raw salad or supplements can cause gas and bloating. Increase over a week or two.
Why fluids matter
Adequate fluid is particularly important when using fibre supplements or managing constipation. A large fibre increase with very little fluid can worsen discomfort.
Do you need a supplement?
Products such as psyllium can be useful in some situations, but increasing fruit, vegetables, legumes and whole grains remains important.
When is assessment important?
New persistent constipation, blood in stool, anaemia, unexplained weight loss or pain that wakes you at night should not be managed only by adding fibre.
Small, sensible changes are easier to sustain over time.
